Sounds like that's more than 999 pages (rather than posts).

This is because it has to fit more characters into the same size box. Unless your talking about something else?

Yep, the formatting is set to fit more numbers in a fixed size box

The number of a threads that have over 999 pages is such, that I think nothing should be done, given that its the exception and not the rule.

I disagree. Clearly worth rewriting the entire site code, then moving to another platform, then abandoning that one for a CMS written by some of Arn's old friends. All it takes is courage, and the willpower to ensure that threads with <999 pages also appear equally small and thin and stylish.
