Remember how in Lion, you had to 4 finger pinch in or out to go to the desktop? Well in Mountain Lion, by default this was changed to 3 finger pinches. The only problem is that, on my mountain lion install, only a 4 finger pinch works for the functionality. The trackpad preferences are clearly set to 3 finger pinches. It's as if I was still running lion? I'm at a loss. Rebooting didn't fix the issue. Any ideas?

Same... 3 finger or 4 finger both work for launchpad (pinch in) and show desktop (pinch out). Kinda annoying because every time i want to swipe between spaces (4 finger left/right), it launches launchpad instead because the angle of my fingers make it look like i'm pinching instead of swiping.....

By "three finger" you literally mean three fingers and your thumb, correct?

If you enable things like three finger drag, your three finger swipes automatically turn into four four finger swipe.

Someone told me this after I had a similar problem: try using all five fingers on the trackpad and spreading them out to show desktop (or in for launchpad) for the four finger gestures. It's worked flawlessly for me

That does seem to work.

It's weird. Because in the settings, it clearly shows the gesture as taking your thumb, index, and middle finger, and pinching. But that clearly does not work. It's either 4 fingers or 5 fingers.
