First off I'm running 10.3.9 on an iMac G4. For most of the time I've had the computer (very rarely the first two years or so) I've gotten the occasional screen-darkens-slightly-and-gives-a-message-in-a-few-languages-telling-me-I-must-restart problem. The only option when it happens is to hold down the power button until the computer shuts off. I don't have any idea what causes it and I can't pinpoint any specific time when it happens. My Problem with it is that it's been happening much more often lately. It actually seemed to increase with the 10.3.9 update.
My second problem just started yesterday and it's a little more weird. All of a sudden the mouse froze and I couldn't do anything, then after about 10 seconds I could move it again, but nothing could be clicked on, then about ten seconds after that I can click on things and it works fine. Then repeat. The problem persists until I restart or shut down which is a must because it's essentially unusable. It happened last night and again this afternoon.
My last problem is stranger still and has to do with iTunes. This afternoon when I turned on my computer I opened up iTunes via the dock. It bounced a couple times and stopped, however the window never shows up and the iTunes menu doesn't appear where that of the viewed application usually does. Right-clicking the iTunes icon only gives me the options "show in finder," "hide" and "force quit" along with above them gray text saying "application is not responding."
So I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do here. These three problems are proving quite inconvenient. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, and I would really like to fix this without reinstalling the OS.

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

The darkened screen is a kernal attack. Not very good. If its happening alot than there may be a problem.

Have u installed anything new? (Ram, Graphics card, new mouse even?)

I'm not sure what to do with kernal attacks because i've only had two. Although that was waaaaaaaaay long ago.

Try to repair permissions but I have a feeling you will need to do a full reinstall.

It kind of sounds like a graphics card issue to me but I could be wrong. That or did you install memory recently.

Haven't installed anything new in awhile....Yeah, I can't even remember the last software install I did, other than the updates from software update. Hardware I guess a couple days ago I took the printer from my dad's computer and plugged it in up here so I could print in color. It's not hooked up anymore.

What exactly is a kernel attack?

You mean Kernel Panic.

That is when the OS hits a brick wall. Bam, Pow, Game Over. Usually they are caused when hardware goes bad (and the operating system sends a signal, it fails, and the error trapping isn't there, and boom!). Of course, software can cause these too but its really hard. Like, almost have to try to get one in OS X. Hardware is more likely. RAM is the usual culprit. Insert the Apple Hardware Test CD (or TechTools CD, whatever you have) and run it. See if the RAM comes up bad or VRAM (video RAM). To run all the tests can take a bit, but its worth it to figure out what is going wrong.

any ideas on the iTunes problem? It still won't successfully open. It just thinks it opens but the window never comes up and I can do anything with it.

^ Did you recently upgrade to QuickTime7 via Software Update?

Do you use ProTools LE?

It's possible that you may have a corrupt iTunes file. Did you download any bad files.

You don't have to reinstall iTunes. The QT7 software update is at fault.

Having Protools LE installed and upgrading to Quicktime7 via software update produces a conflict. I'm guessing your Quicktime Player behaves the same as iTunes.

Read this to fix your machine. You have to get into the Digidesign Core Audio Setup to fix iTunes.

I think that for now us Protools people will have to live w/o QT7.
