Thrifty find - Office 2011 New

So I found a new version of office 2011 for Mac for $2.99. It looked too good to be true, granted the software is 8-9 years old. But it works! It activated and I’m able to do my school work on my MacBook
Previously I had found Office 2003 Home and Student at a thrift store for $1.50.
What are your guys’ thoughts on thrifty finds?

Unsure of legitimacy of software from lessor known sources. Use with caution.

If it works out for you, great. But remember the adage "too good to be true" usually rings true at some point.

True. I’m running El Capitan. It’s the original software from Microsoft. The key was input into Microsoft office website and it downloaded it (figure probably updated more so compared to cd/dvd)

MS isn't delivering/offering any updates to MS Office 2011, that's one important thing to be aware of.
Also, if you plan to use it anyway, don't rely on Outlook 2011, use another email client.

MS Office 2016 is a much better release.

Office 2011 is alive and well with High Sierra and there is no reason to believe that it will cease to function in Mojave. Apple has already stated that 32 bit apps will cease to function with the next (after Mojave) version of macOS.

Regarding MS support... it has ended for Office 2011. Which by the way is no big deal. I can't remember the last time I ever needed support from MS.

@slooksterPSV: Great find and great price. Just continue to use Office 2011 which still works fine in High Sierra and likely with Mojave. After Mojave, you can switch to Pages.

Unpatched Microsoft software is a terrible security risk. Nation state actors have used it as a vector to target Mac users in the past.

Oh I’m well aware of the security risks posed with legacy software. I’m not too concerned about that as the software is being used to write papers for school. Anything else I use Pages on iCloud or iPad or Word 2013 on my pc.

Despite claiming that office 2011 is not longer supported, Microsoft has recently ( at least as of sept 2017) issued updates for 2011 and all seems to work on Sierra and High Sierra.

Been using office 2011 since it came out and has been easy to migrate to new OS and reactivate - even recently to High Sierra. Been using it since Lion and all the OSX versions in between - it got a little flakey on El Cap for a while but they issued an update to solve it. pretty awesome MS support IMHO

Purchased Office 2016 a while ago mostly because of exchange email requirements in outlook, but to be honest I prefer the 2011 versions and they still work fine.

Many schools have an Office 365 offer for students, probably included in technology fees. If your school offers it, you might consider installing that.
