Thunderbird connection problem

New iMac user and already a BIG fanboy! I have a Thunderbird email account and after my initial login - with no trouble - after I have been away for 10 minutes or so and try to "get mail" I get a dropdown box that the pop-server refuses the connection. This sequence continues for two or three times, then the "get mail" command works fine. Any thoughts?
