Thunderbird Email Profile Issue

I use Thunderbird for email. Desktop has died but I have a recent thunderbird profile backup which I want to put on my Macbook. However copying and pasting backup default profile and pasting into new profile on Macbook does not work for me. i have read many articles on net but cannot find the solution. Does any one have suggestions or know how to complete the restore of the email profile.
