Thunderbolt 3

I have the latest iMac 27" which has thunderbolt 2. Looking at storage with thunderbolt 3 connectivity.
Will the adapters that are out there work in that configuration? From what I read it seems like the iMac would need to be thunderbolt 3 for this to work properly. Has anyone tried this successfully?

Apple sells a TB2-TB3 adapter and explicitly explains that this adapter can be used to connect TB2 devices to the TB3 Macs and vice versa. So if you want to connect TB3 to your TB2 Mac then this adapter works.

Yes I did read this but also have read the comments on Apple's page that mention issues with this adapter. Was just looking to a different forum to see if anyone else had problems/solutions to this.

The issues mentioned are from people trying to use it for anything else than connecting a Thunderbolt device. Apple has a KB article where it states that only Thunderbolt devices are supported so no DisplayPort, DVI/HDMI, VGA, USB (be careful with USB-C..it can be either USB or Thunderbolt!), etc. Too bad they don't link to this KB article from the accessory page.

To stress again: this is a Thunderbolt only adapter and won't work with anything but Thunderbolt. Basically, if it says anything but Thunderbolt it is not compatible.

Does it come with male to female adapters then because I don't see how you can connect to TB2 on the iMac with a female connector?

TB3 male connector and TB2 female connector thus you'd need a TB2 cable if you want to connect a TB3 device to your iMac. Which is also what you'd need if you want to do the exact opposite (connect a TB2 device to the new MBP).
