Thunderbolt cables ?

I recently bought an external hd with thunderbolt for my iMac. I'd does have 2 thunderbolt interfaces on the back. I've the net high low and couldn't seem to find a definitive answer to my question. " can I use a minidisplay port cable on my thunderbolt drive" ? Any info would be great. Thanks all!!!

The cable between your Mac and the drive has to be a Thunderbolt cable. Thunderbolt 1&2 cables are active cables with a "cable controller" chip built in to the connectors at each end. MiniDP cables won't carry Thunderbolt data.

However, you can connect a MiniDisplayPort cable between the spare port on the drive and a display with MiniDisplayPort input - Or use any of the usual MiniDisplayPort-to-VGA/DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort adapters.
