Thunderbolt (DisplayPort) or HDMI on LG monitor

I've got a 2013 MacBook Pro Retina and a LG 27 UD68 monitor.

I've got it hooked up with an HDMI cable and it works.

Would there be an advantage to using the Thunderbolt/DisplayPort output through an adaptor to the DisplayPort input of the LG monitor?

I don't find any cables that do it one step.

There is no advantage in using a different cable, especially adapter to hdmi, that's just the same. Your laptop supports 2560x1440@60Hz on any output device, so you will not be able to get a crisper picture and use full potential of your monitor with this laptop, unfortunately.

Thank you. I can't quite keep track of all of this.

BTW Display shows 3840 x 2160, although I don't know about the frequency. I think for may purposes it may not matter. I generally can't use all the pixels (too small) and I don't use anything that i'm aware of that needs 60Hz (but I could easily be wrong). Right now I'm using 2560 x 1440.

That's correct, that is the maximum resolution that your laptop supports at 60hz, you can also get 3840x2160 at 30Hz, but the picture is going to lag a lot.
