I'm aware that everyone reads every last thunderbolt expansion card the riot act at present. "Don't do it!" "It will never work!" "Just no!" etc etc. Consensus seems universal.

Roger that!

Alright, but is there a TB pcie expansion card that works well enough to mount a 2nd machine in target disk mode (via TB, not firewire) and copy files? No more, no less. Just mount a TB-only (no firewire port) machine and the TB card works well enough in a MacPro 4,1 to see it and copy files without error.

That's really all I want. No HD cameras or other TB accessories. Just target disk mode access to a TB-only machine. I don't even care about speeds.

No it's the same thing. When Apple first demoed Lightpeak/TB it was with a Z97 based Hackintosh (disguised as a Mac Pro). The chipset used in the cMP is older than that.

The question to ask the group is can a USB 3 or 3.1 card allow a second machine to mount in target mode on your desktop. That speed will be sufficient.

How would you hack the EFI firmware to let target disk mode use USB? That seems like more of a stretch.

If the bottom line is that NONE of the TB expansion cards even work well enough for target disk use... well, that's that then. Roger wilco over and out. Seemed like a fair question.
