Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt connection

Hi folks,

Trying to figure out the fastest connection for copying data between a T2 drive and a T1 drive.

Should I daisy chain them or use separate ports on my nMP?

Will it make a difference?

Use separate ports on your nMP, and make sure you have each drive on a different Thunderbolt bus. Here's a document showing which ports are on which Thunderbolt bus:

It probably won't make much of a difference unless you have really fast drives, but this would guarantee the fastest transfer rates.

Really far more likely depends upon the drives inside the two Thunderbolt devices than on Thunderbolt.

HDD in device one and HDD in device two. Doesn't make a difference.
Even 4 HDDs in device and 4 HDDs in another it won't make much of a difference.

Remember the copy is going in two directions (inbound from one and outbound to another) Thunderbolt traffic in either direction doesn't impact.


If have a Thunderbolt 2 host system then better performance to hook the TB v2 external first and the TB v1 ones after. The 2nd port on the first external drive is probably easier to get to than yet another port on the back of the Mac Pro.

For example one external direct external drive enclosures that is statically connected and one "sneaker net" drive ( data for a transitory project ). Then plugging the second into the first probably works.


You can use multiple ports if copying from RAID SSDs to RAID SSDs but otherwise it probably won't make much of a difference.
