Hi .I wonder if anyone can help?.I have a 2012 Macbook pro and want to connect external Hardrive using the thunderbolt port .I am looking for a lead with a standard female USB socket at the end . I am told this will be faster than plugging it into the normal USB port on the Mac

Many thanks .

Yeah it won't be faster, at least not significantly. The 2012 Macbooks already had USB 3, which is plenty fast.

The Thunderbolt implementation is Thunderbolt 2, which is capped at 20Gbps (though in practice you won't get that), which you will need to connect to either a) a Thunderbolt 2 dock which itself will only have USB 3 most likely, or b) go through the Apple TB2-TB3 adapter to a dock with USB (since the adapter doesn't adapt to USB-C).

TLDR use the USB ports.

Thanks very much for your reply in that case I will stick to the normal USB ports
