Sometimes my iMac will have a ticking sound coming from within it...

Usually when the screen saver is on...

It kinda sounds like a watch...

Am I crazy or have other ppl heard it aswell?

What is the screen saver?
Is it something that the iMac needs to access the harddrive for?

Yeap! i have the core 2 duo 20" imac.. it's my third one to be precise.

The first one had a faulty screen.. The other two had a "ticking"fanblade every now and then.. Sounds like a kitchen clock..

It's a hardware issue. The sound could dissapear, but it can also become even more noisy after some weeks.

Contact apple!

EXACTLY

How did you get apple to replace it for you?

Will they transfer everything from the harddrive onto the new Mac?

Will they offer upgrade options such as video card? (HP does)

Thanks!

It definitely sounds like a dodgy fan - I had the same thing, coming from around the power supply near the top of the case (not the HD). I sent it back. If you haven't had it for more than a couple of weeks, call up Applecare and ask for it to be DOA. Otherwise they'll ask to have it repaired, and you'll have to fight to return it.

I told them the problems.. noisy tickin fan, faulty Airport and dead pixels. And i made it clear for them that i'm not satisfied to send a 7 days old computer for repairs. Then it's not new anymore!

I'm afraid they won't transfer anything. A delivery service will pick the faulty one up, and then apple will send you a new one.

Apple won't offer you a better video card. They have no reason to.
To get that you have to pay another 70$ and wait at least one week longer.

To be frank with you. The past 4 weeks i have experiencec such annoying issues with the new iMacs i have recieved, so when the latest one had a faulty Airport, i just got tired and angry of waiting for a proper machine to come up, so i demanded applestore for a total refund, which i got.
I'm still going to buy an iMac, but this time at my local computerstore. If anything fails the critical first 30 days, the only thing i have to do is to have it exchanged emediately.

My experiences with apple support (in europe) is great thou.. Good service, good customer care, generous behaviours when it comes to warranty, replacements, and also no customer related wars against refunds, if the customers just ain't satisfied with their products.

I'd have to agree with that. It's always a pain when you have to deal with them, but they are polite, and offered a refund as one of my options when I DOAed the iMac, even though I didn't even mention it.

This could be the hard drive performing routine maintenance/optimization on itself. The Apple supplied Western Digitial in my Mac Pro does this when the computer is idle and it sounds like clicking.

Sean :)

The hard drive grinding sounds a lot different than this clicking noise I am hearing...

But if it really were the fans shouldn't it do it all the time?

The "grinding" noise occurs when the drive is in use. The clicking sound will only occur when the drive is idle.

Makes sense to me... I don't see how fans could click anyway...

And as soon as I move the mouse the noise stops...
