Hi,

I'm looking at buying an iBook soon. I'd like to know how much space Tiger and the Dev tools will eat up. Also, how much free space should I keep on the disk for efficient memory paging?

So, with space for:

- System
- Dev tools
- Applications (typical)
- Recommended free space for paging

How much will be left over for my own files on a 40GB disk?

The dev tools only eat up a gig or two. I've got 30GB left on my 60GB drive with Tiger, iLife (some of those apps are huge), and dev tools as well as many of my own files. I figure you'll want maybe, what, 5+GB free for swapping? So you'd have a few gigs left - more without iLife.

I highly recommend 60GB as a minimum size, though. But... you can make it work with 40GB.

Edit: I managed to squeeze Panther and dev tools onto a 6GB drive in my Lombard PB, but it wasn't pretty. So you'll be fine with 40GB if that's your only option.

Thanks for the input.

The problem is, my previous Mac died on me, and I need a portable ASAP. The iBook looks like the best stopgap solution, I'll probably be able to get an Intel PB when they come out, but right now the PB line is overpriced for my needs.

Trouble is, if I want to upgrade to 60GB, I'll have to wait at least 10 days for it to arrive, whereas the stock 40GB I can buy in a store and take home immediately. That's my dilemma.
