Tiger on a older model Computer with a CD drive

I would like to install Tiger on the computer but it seems to have a CD drive and the Tiger Install is DVDs.

I would like to upgrade/replace the currently installed OS9, which doesn't work very well. Any suggestions on how I can do this before I start to poke around with it... Thoughts?

External DVD drive
Another Mac
Firewire

and other stuff.

I'm pretty sure you could boot the Mac into target disk mode and install Tiger on it from the other Mac, although I've never done it.

The only thing I believe the OP could do would be to try to install it by putting the computer in target disk mode... other than that, I'd try some installation CDs... won't be Tiger, but it'll be better than OS 9.

I was thinking about using this instead of the copy of tiger DVD's i have. That way I can migrate everything to my backup computer, and have it incase the main one needs to go in for repairs.

I think its a G3, G4 iMac (Its one of those colored ones with a CRT screen embedded in it). Its at home and I'm at work, I meant to bring the specs with me, but forgot.

I just remembered that you can create a hard drive based OS X installer, it has to be FireWire though. The CRT iMac is a G3 version.

Well I updated the firmware, restarted the computer, 20seconds in the harddrive distroyed itself (it made a very bad knocking sound ).

Ran disk utilities from a CD etc, it doesn't even registar... so I think it be dead.

Nope -- HArd drive destroyed, computer fine.

Really -- every hard drive in the world will fail, sooner or later. On practically any machine other than an iBook G3, installing a new hard drive is cheap and practical for a Mac owner who is reasonably handy with a screwdriver.

I learned that about my ibook after taking out all 37 screws.
