Tiger or Panther on 1G AlBook?

I'm about to do a maintenance backup and reinstall of the OS on my first gen 867MHz 12" PowerBook. I am debating on whether I want to see how Tiger will run on here or if I should just stick to Panther.

I really don't think I'd use the widgets that much, and even with 640MB of RAM, it still hangs sometimes on certain apps. I'd rather not push it by trying to make it handle Tiger.

So, is there any advantage to Tiger or should I stick with what I know works?

Tiger runs really well on my 800MHz G4 iBook with 640MB of RAM, so it should be fine on your PowerBook too.

I have a 667Mhz TiBook I ran Tiger on for a while, with 512MB of RAM. It runs fine, but I just thought Panther was snappier, so I switched back. You'll be fine either way, it just comes down to whether or not you're going to use Tigers new features.

I use Tiger on my PowerBook which is the same model and spec as yours. Apps actually hang a lot less than they did under Panther, probably thanks to Tiger's rewrite of the kernel and underlying OS services.

Go with Tiger. There's more to it than just widgets.

Tiger is faster if your computer has a fast hard drive; for slower hard drives, Panther is faster. Should you ever want to upgrade a hard disk for your 667MHz PowerBook, it would fly with Tiger

Well, I tried borrowing my dad's copy of Tiger that he got with his new PowerBook, and it tells me:

"This software cannot be installed on this computer."

I'm assuming this means I'll be heading out to CompUSA to acquire my own copy of Tiger should I wish to install it on my computer. Correct?

Yeah, it's hardware-specific if it came with a different Powerbook, so you'll have to get a new copy of Tiger.
