so i'm getting ready for lion and i have my time capsule and was planning of doing a clean install and i was thinking of buying an external hard drive just to be on the safe side should i or i don't even need it?

I use them both. Time Capsule = long term backups. External drive = for doing things like clean installs. I use SuperDuper to make a copy of my Mac to the external drive before doing the clean install, and then restore from that.

For me, restoring from an external drive is a gazillion times faster than restoring from Time Capsule (even when connected directly via ethernet).

I doubt all that is necessary (even if somewhat faster); it seems like overkill to me. But if anyone is really interested in pursuing this strategy, I can sell them an external 500GB HDD for cheap.

Based on what you keep on your Mac, it may entirely be overkill.

I have over 200GB of music, photos, videos and virtual machines. Last time I tried Time Capsule, it took about 8 hours to restore everything. With an external drive, it takes a little over an hour. To me, that's "significantly faster", not "somewhat faster". But to each their own.

Wow, what TC model do you own? Because I know that the third generation model along with Snow Leoaprd improved speeds drastically. I have roughly the same amount of media as you do but it surely didn't take me 8 hours to restore...Maybe a couple of hours I think.

2nd gen. Glad to know they're faster now!

that was my plan to because i figuredwith time capsule it is very slow since it's the first gen and for some reason i don't trust it so that's why i figured it's best to have extra backup especially for my macbook pro like when i'm away.
