Time Capsule & Ipad Pro = bye bye old imac??

Hi
I have an old imac that is loaded up with family photos/movies (currently at 156GBs worth). I need to find a way to expand my storage capacity and ditch the old imac while it still works. I purchased a 1 TB Time Capsule that I had planned on using as a wireless backup for a to be purchased mac book pro but looking at the cost and thinking I'll never use all the power of the MacBook pro (mostly I just wanted the 1 TB storage) I'm wondering if an ipad pro with the Time Capsule as an external drive might work. My biggest concern is lag time to load/view photos and short home movies on the ipad that are stored on the Time Capsule. Will this be a pain in the butt?? - enough to make me fork over $$$$ for a mac book pro?

I'm also going to set up an Icloud for the pics and attach an external drive to the Time Capsule for backups no matter which way I go.

Your plan to use Time Capsule as a wireless backup (presumably time machine) for a mac was spot on. Thats what it is designed to do.

Time Capsule CAN act as an external hard drive for a mac... though not as easy as just attaching an external drive.

But Time Capsule is NOT an external hard drive for an IOS device. It doesn't plug in or connect to IOS. IOS is not designed to have a remote hard drive. IOS works with the cloud or its own storage. Thats about it. Its a major drawback for those that want to hook up external storage. There ARE work arounds, various ways of using camera accessories to get USB to get to store pics/movies, but they are a pain. There are also some devices sold to do this, but they are expensive and require third party apps that do not work easily to do what you want.

Time Capsule was designed to be a back up device for macs. Thats mostly it.

Thanks. I'll use it as intended then. Sounds like I need a good LAN. Any suggestions on a simple but reliable one to store a TB or 2?

LAN? That's a network. Storage like the TC might be ON that LAN, but that question was already addressed.

You could get a NAS (the TC is a species of that although most use it just for Time Machine). There are then apps that work with the NAS to access files. Sorta like your own personal cloud. I like Netgear's stuff, but there are tons of others. I'd also suggest you look at Mylio, since it's a good way to synch images across mobile devices and say that NAS, and is specific to photos. For streaming video, look at Plex. That's rather a different issue. Mylio is nice in that it can transfer just info, or previews or thumbnails, so it can work fast and is very customizable.
