Time Capsule V's usb V3 running Time Machine

Hello Everyone from England. This is my first post and I like this forums feel at a first impression.

As a freelance retoucher as of 2013 I haven't left my house, doing all work over Dropbox and I've found the time machine invaluable. Im running it off a Lacie USB V3 with a top of the range Mac and I basically don't notice it working.

Question: Would a 2-3TB Time Capsule at USB V2 be much faster/better than a 2TB Lacie USB running at V3?

My Network is Virgin SuperHup Supercharged, wireless runs off a D-Link DIR-615 if that counts.

Please advise: should I bother upgrade to a Time Capsule?????

Most people use their Time Capsule as a router. It would replace the D-Link and would be quite a bit faster in terms of networking. As for backup speeds, the USB drive is faster. You are looking at maybe 25-30 MBps on the Time Capsule and the USB hard drive can go from 50-100 MBps depending on model. The pros of the Time Capsule is wireless backup from anywhere in the home, but this is irrelevant if using an iMac or other desktop.

In my workflow, my PowerMac G5 is hooked to a FireWire external 640 GB hard drive for Time Machine while my MacBook Pro backs up to an AirPort Extreme with a USB drive connected. This works great as the MacBook Pro never needs to be connected physically to the drive or over Ethernet, it is all wireless. Something to note is that only the 6th generation Extremes support Time Machine to a USB drive despite some people who got it working before. Just want to throw that out there if you were considering that too.

I've noticed that Dropbox undelete sometimes records more options of a file than time machine.

That depends on the size of the Time Capsule and the amount of data being backed up.

The direct USB backup will be much faster. Unless you just want a new router with the Time Machine disk built in for convenience/apperance sake, there is no reason to get a Time Capsule to improve your backup setup.

A Time Machine backup to a Time Capsule will backup at the exact same once per hour frequency as you are seeing now to the USB drive. Where Dropbox instantly backs up any change to a file. So if for example, you made six edits/saves to to a document in the last hour, Dropbox would save all six of those vs. only one save (at the one hour mark) for the Time Machine backup. (If I am understanding your question.)

This is all Great info people. I hate spending money on stuff that doesn't perform appropriately better, even if it does have an apple logo on it As I'm the only person in the house with a pro working mac (not iPad or iPhone) a time capsule would be useless right now.
