The Catalina boot disk in the Mac will be APFS. The target disk for a Time Machine backup must be HFS+.

DS

I converted it to APFS. but how can I install Catalina from there? I can only install Mojave?
I was hoping I could get back on there with APFS. AND DO IT FROM THERE.

After installing Catalina yesterday, I have a message that Time Machine can't make a backup to an external drive. The message I got was:

Two of the disks to back up have the same name. Rename one of the disks named “Macintosh HD - Data”.

Fine and dandy except that one of the disks is named Macintosh HD- Data, the other is Macintosh HD. I was hoping to avoid another call to Apple. Any ideas?

I've not thought about this in a while, but if I start over with Time Machine, will I have to designate which drive I want to backup or will it automatically backup the Macintosh Drive it's supposed to? I know you can tell it what external drives you don't want it to backup.

After installing Catalina on my iMac desktop I'm now seeing my internal hard drive broken down into 3 parts. First is HD the second is HD-Data "home" and the third is HD-Data. Does this mean I can't back up using time machine with my external portable t5 drive? Sorry if this sounds silly but I'm now confused.

Mac mini. 2012. OS Mojave. I had my Time Machine back up as the start-up disc and tried to
convert my Mac HD to APFS tried it twice it failed to convert it two APFS both times.
I thought I would put os Catalina on an external SSD, I tried to convert it to APFS I had no success there either. Also, APFS does not show up in the format when erasing the disc. Knorr can I partition the drive? Would I have to go back to start up on the disc to do it there, and reinstall Mojave when i have converted the Mac HD to APFS. When i have done that could i update the new OS from there as i would have the Mac HD. in APFS?
