Time Machine and WD My Cloud...

Hey

Just wondering if anyone knows this, I've been contemplating a WD My Cloud drive for when I get my MacBook Pro next month and wanted to know if Time Machine can be setup to work over WiFi or will I have to plug the MacBook directly into the drive for it to back up?

Sorry if this sounds silly/confusing, I've never used Time Machine so I'm not entirely sure how it works in regards to creating back ups or if something like the WD My Cloud is even capable of doing what I'm saying here.

Anyway, if anyone knows if this works or how to set it up please let me know

I've given up on My Cloud for Time Machine backups. I constantly had to start new backups because of verification failures, which appears, from a quick Google search, to be a very, very common problem. On top of that, I reinstalled Sierra on my iMac this week and tried to use what I thought was a working Time Machine backup on the My Cloud, three times, and it failed every time. I ended up having to clean install and recover from a flash drive that, thankfully, I had copied my files and email to before attempting the reinstall. You're probably better off buying an external HDD for Time Machine.

Doesn't sound promising, I was hoping to avoid having to make backups by connecting directly to a HDD each time but maybe that's my only option.

The WD My Cloud would be connected to your existing router using an ethernet cable, then by connected to your router over wifi you would be able to use the WD for Time Machine backups.

The WD device does advertise they support Time Machine, but like I Need a Drink mentioned, it does not seem to work very well. The forums here are full of people having the same trouble he described in his post.

If you want seemless, wireless Time Machine operation you are better off by either an Apple Time Capsule or a new 802.11ac Apple Airport Extreme with with an external USB drive attached to the Extreme.
