I read that since 10.10.2 they removed the sparkle that would have happened if a new app was installed from the app store.
Did they do something similar with time machine? When time machine backups it used to show a little spinning animation in the task bar. Was this removed?

That actually went away with the first 10.10.0 Yosemite release.

Aha, thanks. I thought it might be a bug, just started using time machine again recently and noticed the missing animation. It still does the animation in finder.

If you look closely, when TM is backing up a second little arrow will appear so there are two arrows there pointing at each other in the circle.

Even earlier than that, the spinning TM icon was removed in Mavericks :(

Yep, it disappeared in Mavericks in the name of battery conversation, which I thought it was rather lame. I think the animation was useful to communicate the backups.
