I am looking to do a Time Machine backup from my new M1 iMac to a mid 2011 iMac to before I update software on new iMac to Ventura. I have them connected via ethernet cable. I have enough space on the old iMac HDD, but it is not appearing as a backup disk option when I open Time Machine on the new iMac. I am seeing other sub-folder options on the SSD that I installed in the old iMac, but there is insufficient space on the SSD for the backup. Can anyone help me with this? I am wondering if it is because the old HDD is called "Macintosh HD", but so is the main SSD in the new iMac.

This is one of those things that definitely isn't "intuitive". I setup a 2012 Mini as a time machine destination a few years ago and couldn't figure it out either! Apple has a FAQ about it now, I had to find an article on another site back then.

Thanks, very helpful, get to the stage where I can see the disk listed under Time Machine on the new iMac, but then I get asked for the password, which I enter but then get the following message "You do not have the necessary read, write and append privileges on the selected network backup disk" I am sure I am entering the correct password for my old iMac, but not getting access to the disk.

Managed to get it sorted, was trying to go directly to disk, but then tried changing it to a sub folder on the disk and it has now worked. Thanks a lot for your help.

Glad you got it working. I was able to choose the whole backup disk, but looking at the sharing preferences on my destination Mac, it actually shows the disk as a folder for some reason. Weird.
