Time Machine backup using WD MyPassport

Hi all,

Forgive me, but I'm pretty new to all this.

I have a Netgear N300 router, and my WD MyPassport being shared over the network via USB from the router.

Any idea how I can configure this 'network storage' to be used for my time machine backups?

Would appreciate any help.

To use a USB disk for Time Machine with a router the router needs to support Apple's AFP network protocol. From looking at the specs of your N300, it does not appear to support AFP so it won't work with Time Machine.

Could you let me know of any reasonable priced routers I could buy so that I could get this to work?

I also have a BT home hub that I could use providing this used the correct protocol?

From a bit of Googling it does not look like the BT Hub supports AFP either.

If remote Time Machine is your goal, the new Apple Time Capsule works quite well. The previous versions were a bit overpriced, but the new one is 802.11ac and has a 2TB drive, so is not a bad deal at $299 US.

Is it Western Digital 500GB My Passport Essential 2.5" Portable Hard Drive?

Can you ping the router? Did you go into the router and "share" the hard drive across the network? Can you format that drive for HFS+? Can you mount the drive? What router are you using?

Have a look at a Raspberry Pi. http://www.raspberrypi.org/

Got one running XBMC media center, network file server, and time machine backup server. Not bad for $35 + an SD card. It routinely has uptimes of 30+days.

The tutorial for configuring time machine server. Its not terribly complicated, and as an added bonus, you'll have a little Linux knowledge when you're done.
