I have two SSDs connected to a Mac Mini in my wired network. My MBP does TM backups to both SSDs hourly, as it should. One disk was taken in use later than the other.

The original disk (Let’s call it Disk A) goes back about 4 months. The new disk (Let’s call it Disk B) goes back a month.

If I enter TM to recover a file, I can go back as far as Disk B’s starting date. However, I see the lines all the way back to the starting date of Disk A, but they are greyed out. Means I can not access them.

Does anybody know how to fix this?

Double click your TM drive on your desktop.
There should be a button in the top right corner of the Finder window to enter TM.

I see no such option when I do this.

Try opening a Finder window, select your TM drive and click enter TM.
I’ve never noticed this. I’ve also never seen a TM guide mention this method — most describe via the menuling err menu bar icon.
One of those hiding in plain sight features. ☺️

I read someone information about using fsck to verify disks yesterday as my Time Machine backup stopped working...... I just gave up in the end and started using carbon copy cloner to make backups instead.

I use TM to backup the internal SSD on my mini as well as an external SSD that I use for media storage. A few weeks ago I went into TM to check on some files on the external drive and discovered TM had stopped backing up that drive towards the end of Dec. When scrolling through the timeline when on that the drive they were greyed out out. Internal drive still backed up fine. Looking in Finder the external drive backup files in backup disk, it was listed but there was nothing backed up into its folder after Dec. Just a guess but that was around the time I updated to Sequoia.

Not knowing how to fix this I just bumbled my way through. First I added the external drive to the excluded devices and rebooted the mini. Then I removed the external drive from the excluded list and rebooted again. Somehow I got lucky and this fixed the problem although I have no idea why. It continues to work fine.

Good for you! And a nice idea.

FYI, I swapped my T7 (bus powered TM) for a ‘powered HDD’ drive and all backups show as normal when entering TM.
