I've currently got a DAS which is partitioned to backup my macbook and mac pro via time machine.

However I still have to unplug it from my desktop and plug it in to my macbook, meaning I don't do it as often as I should.

I've been thinking about paying to £20 to upgrade the OS X to server..... has anyone had any experience of doing this? I'm particularly interested in any effects it may have on day to day software I used on the desktop, word, aperture etc.

Go for it. OSX Server is a separate app on your desktop. It doesn't change the rest of the OS one iota.

ah brilliant.... thanks for the heads up

It would allow me to backup to my DAS via my mac pro though right?

Do you know if it uses up much resources? I've got a 2008 mac pro, which is pretty darn slow these days.

Yeah, I do just that. Not much - I got a 2009 Mac mini, works just fine. I sometimes do Time Machine over the internet from another country to a usb drive connected to the mini and works just fine too (upload speed dependent of course).
