I have a serious problem with Time Machine. It makes backups normally but when I try to restore files from backup it crashes every time.

Mac Mini 2014 middle model, I installed El Capitan 10.11.1 to external 1 T hard drive for testing purposes (I am glad I did because if this kind of problem occurred with my main install I would be furious). Time Machine backup is another 1 T external hard drive. Drive has no third party software.

I tested both external hard drives with Techtool Pro and DiskWarrior, no problems found. Furthermore drives are otherwise functioning normally and Mac Mini had its motherboard replaced a few months ago so I am almost certain problem has to be in the El Capitan and not hardware.

Apple discussion had a few threads about similar issue but they may not be relevant because I am not using multiple monitors unlike most people on those threads and only Time Machine crashes, Finder doesn't...

I reported problem to Apple and I'm currently waiting for reply.

I am curious if someone else has similar problems?

Update:

So far Apple has been unable to found out why the problem is occurring. I send additional information to Apple and I'm waiting further information.

Another update:

It seems El Capitan Time Machine has a bug when used with USB3 drives, what makes it hard to fix because its "difficult to reproduce every time". Apparently it occurs only in some combination of Macs and external drives, at this point there is no ETA as for when the bug is fixed.

Hopefully bug will fixed in some future version of 10.11.

Bigger question is how its possible that Apple didn't find this in internal testing??? Reliability of backup should be number 1 priority in testing...

This doesn't exactly improve my confidence in the reliability of Time Machine...

Update:

I installed 10.11.2 Combo update, made a Time Machine backup and tried restore with the same results as previously. While 10.11.2 apparently contained some USB fixes it clearly didn't resolve my issue...

I send Apple another report but at this point I'm starting to wonder when this bug is fixed, at this rate of progress probably 10.11.4 or .5?

Just curious, what external hard drive do ya use? Want to know if I'm going to be affected.
