I have a 2TB external HDD connected to my iMac being used as my time machine back up drive. I also use this drive regularly for films and music and its also shared over my local network.

I seem to be having real problems with it disconnecting itself from my computer though. I'm not sure why it does this but the only way for the Mac to recognise it again is to power cycle the drive which is really irritating!

Does anyone know a way to stop this happening and for it to stay permanently connected?

Thanks in advance :)

When you say "connected" is that via cable or wirelessly? If it's wireless, then you're connection may be dropping out. If hard-wired, your drive may be pulling more power than your bus can provide. In that case, you'd need to either use AC/DC power if available or a 2-to-1 USB connector using both ports.

HTH ... Cheers!

Well if that doesn't beat all! One thing I'd check is your cables to see if one of them (power, USB) is the culprit. Perhaps you could swap them out one by one to see if that isolates it. Other than that, I'd back it up and re-format as a last resort.

Time Machine Drive keeps disconnecting

I am having the same problem. I have a 2 TB external drive using USB. Every once in a while it disappear. I have also put a Fat32 partition on the drive. I have switched the USB ports but it does not seem to make a difference. Any advise would be helpful.

Cheers
