Hello. I have a 14" MBP (1TB) and an HP U28 monitor. The monitor can provide some dock functionality as it has 3 USB-A 5Ggbps ports and a USB-C port to connect to the MBP. I have a keyboard/mouse plugged into USB switcher (for work Dell laptop) and one output of switcher goes to monitor (other goes to Dell dock for the Dell laptop). This monitor also provides 65W of power to the USB-C port which allows a single cable to be used to the MBP (power/display/peripherals).

If I plug an external HD into the monitor, the MBP will see it if it's connected to the monitor, and I can set that up for Time Machine. But does mean anytime I want to unplug the MBP and take it somewhere, I have to "eject" the TM drive? Or put the MBP to sleep prior to removing the cable?

Well, that's expected, but a bummer. I could just plug the drive in over night and let it backup, but you lose always have data backed up all the time. I guess a NAS drive could do that though, plugged into the router.
