Time Machine error

My time machine won't back up because it says it needs 348 GB and that my drive only has 3.01 TB. I ran disk first aid on both the computer and the drive which hasn't changed things.

I am using a 27 in iMac 2017 3.4 ghz Quad core with 64 GB of memory. thanks for any suggestions.

That's crazy. Obviously 3.01 TB is over 8 times larger than 348 GB so that message makes zero sense. Does Disk Utility show 3.01 TB of free space for that disk?

Yes there is 3.01 TB free space.

I think I figured it out though. The various drives I was trying were all formatted as EX-FAT because I used these drives on both macs and PCs. Those drives were giving TM troubles. I reformatted another drive as journaled (not case sensitive) and now it seems to be copying successfully although it’s taking a long time.

Seems like macOS should be able to give a proper error message though, since it obviously knows the formatting of the disk. E.g. "Please reformat this disk in [required format(s)] before using with Time Machine"

I read that that if you leave it up to Time Machine, it will format the drive as Case sensitive which isnt ideal for Time machine.

I am still waiting for this new drive to finish backing up before I declare issues resolved.
