Time Machine Issue?

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue.

I use Time Machine to back up to a Time Capsule. My email client is iCloud mail.

Prior to upgrading to Catalina, I was able to go into Time Machine and by navigating to my iCloud Inbox, select individual emails to restore. Since upgrading, when I try to do that Time Machine shuts down.

I know that it is possible to backup iCloud mailboxes in their entirety (using the mail client) but sometimes I delete an individual email by mistake and it is helpful to have the ability to restore it. Any advice would be appreciated!

In case it is helpful, the error message is "Mail Quit Unexpectedly." Looking in the error log I see:

Have you tried to install latest updates? What version of Catalina are you using? Try to reinstall Catalina after saving information.

Do you know how to use Internet Recovery Mode?

I have not used it before - if you point me in that direction I would be grateful. I do confess I would prefer not to do a reinstall of the OS if possible.

Restart your Mac and press these keys command, option, and R at boot and it will show a spinning globe hold the keys then release. Its going to show a list of networks choose your wifi. I hope this helps.

Be careful using Internet Recovery as that will restore the original version of macOS that your iMac came with. I don't believe you want that. Rather than doing some drastic action, why don't you just remove the Time Machine backup you have and start over? Sure, you will have lost some older backups but it's better that tossing the entire system. Also, I highly recommend you use cloning software for backing up in addition to Time Machine. Carbon Copy Cloner is an excellent choice and it works well.

Yes I don't want to restore the OS if I can avoid that. I tried removing the Time Machine backup a few weeks ago and the error persisted but I'll try again.

Would Carbon Copy Cloner allow me to restore invidual iCloud emails - or just the "On My Mac" emails? If it backs up iCloud emails I will definitely consider it. Thank you.

Carbon Copy Cloner will only restore those emails on your Mac. It does not backup iCloud email.

Unfortunately starting over with Time Machine didn't solve the problem. I'll have to consider reinstalling the OS unless this is a Catalina problem.

Since you're backing up to a NAS, I don't know whether there may be a compatibility problem because of Catalina. Someone else will have to help you with that. I strictly use CCC with its Safety Net on which allows going back in time for file versions that have been backed up.

Thanks. I will do research on the Time Capsule as well. In the meantime, I also determined that the same issues applies to mail in my "On My Mac" folders. In Time Machine I can briefly see the messages before it shuts down - but the Subject lines are all a gibberish series of letters and numbers.

Last you can run Console app in Utilities folder and look for Errors and Faults. if you see anything wrong take snapshot of console screen and I'll check it out or if you feel you must send screenshot to Apple using Apple Support website.

I am starting to think that doing a clean install of Catalina is not a bad idea.....

I had a similar issue a while back - I installed another backup software (can't remember which one at the moment) and it pointed out a file that had an error in it (similar message to what you are getting). It allowed me to delete that file then TM worked fine.
Look at some of the other backups and try the software and see if it give move information
