This is my first post here.

Time machine was working fine until this morning when I upgraded to the latest Mac0S on my MacBook Pro (16-inch 2021) Apple M1 Pro 16GB. I now have macOS Monterey Version 12.1.

Now, when I click backup now it seems to work but it only backs up to the local snap shot. It does not back up to. my selected external drive.

Debugging attempts:
-----------------------
I reselected the drive multiple times.
I rebooted multiple times.
After Googling this problem I opened terminal and ran killall -KILL SystemUIServer.

Any help would be appreciated.

When I go into time machine I see all of the latest versions but I assume that is because it is looking at the local snapshots and NOT at my external drive.

Thanks for your reply but that thread is about how long a backup takes. My problem is that it isn't backing up to my external drive even though it is set to do so. It is backing up to the local snap shot.

You really need to read the thread. I know there are many pages. But later, and a majority of messages, discuss the problem of TM failing to backup, not completing backups, and other issues - particularly with Monterrey 12 up to 12.1 and M1 (including Pro and Max) machines, multiple workarounds and multiple reports of Apple acknowledging the issue. There is at least one report that the latest beta appears to fix the failure to complete a backup. MacRumors had an article quoting that same thread: https://www.macrumors.com/2021/12/08/time-machine-initial-backup-error/

The issue for me is still unresolved (but I am not using the latest beta). I, and many others, have switched to CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) which is working great

I did experience the "oldest backup none" problem when I reselected my drive. It is unfortunate when you can't rely on your backup program.

Hello Bryan,

What I would recommend you do is the following:

1. Make a manual backup of all critical data. Put this on an external drive / storage media.
2. Wait for Apple to sort out all of this mess with regards to macOS Monterey and Time Machine.

Good luck!
