i did not have such a problem previously but ever since i installed Yosemite, it has never completed a backup of the system and keeps prompting me that my 2TB HDD is full.

I have already reformatted time capsule and it still prompts the same error. backing up using Mavericks had no problems whatsoever and it only occupied 200GB.

For whatever reason, the half completed/failed backup is showing as taking up 1.6TB of HDD space. My laptop only has 256GB and the actual home folder occupies less then that.

Anyone else having a similar problem?

I wouldn't worry about Time Machine on Yosemite too much. The whole thing is basically a buggy, unusable mess and I'm sure we've all reported this to Apple. They're probably working on fixing it up for the next beta or whenever.

Unknown with Time Capsule but...

I had to start over with a clean USB thumb drive. Went into Disk Utility to do it.

Than I had to remove the old back up in Time Machine > Select a disk with the new name I gave it > Deleted the old Disk name, and start fresh with a new Time Machine install.
