I recently took a hard drive, 500 GB WD, from an old aluminium iMac. Using a 3rd party 3.5" HDD docking station connected to my 2016 MBP formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted), I tried to commit to an encrypted backup to this old HDD. The total size of which was around 140GB. After the backup has reached a certain unspecified stage, macOS on my MBP goes absolutely bananas. It starts requesting keychain access for a bunch of processes (accountsd etc.). The status bar disappears, re-appears. Dock restarts several times. The laptop becomes unusable.
The docking station for the hard drive does not provide any sort of cooling for the HDD which seems to get very hot relatively quickly, I figure this could have something to do with it as well.
This happens every time I try to do an encrypted backup. I was able to do the whole backup without any issues in a non-encrypted format.
Would anyone here have any idea what is going wrong? Is the HDD gone? Is this a bug in Catalina? Any clarity would be appreciated.
