I decided to replace my ageing Time Capsule and opted to connect a portable HDD to my 2019 iMac for TM backups - not a problem. I want to use this drive for backing up a second iMac as well. I enabled file sharing on the host iMac and selected the USB HDD, again no problem. The host iMac completed the first TM backup. I then moved to the remote iMac selected the new network HDD from the sidebar selected use this disk in TM and the machine backed up over the network without issue.

However, when I went back to the host computer I have an onscreen message about choosing new backup or inheriting the history from the other iMac’s backup and a warning that if I choose that option then I can’t use the backup on that remote iMac anymore. I chose new backup option. However, this message comes up every time the remote iMac completes a TM backup. What’s going on and how do I stop the warnings.

I've sorted this issue myself. When I was setting up the folder I had allocated in "sharing" for the remote iMac TM backups I missed out one vital step.

  1. Ctrl + Click (right click) on the drive you just added and select ‘Advanced Options’.
  2. Check ‘Share as a Time Machine backup destination’. Enter a quota if you want. :)
