Time Machine Question

Hello,

Have a new desktop iMac, and pretty much have it set up the way I want.

Also have a external HD from older Mac that
was dedicated for Time Machine.

If I plug it into the new Mac, will it now become the de-fault arrangement, and everything I recently set up on the brand new Mac will be totally disregarded ?

Or, I can keep what I set up recently on new Mac, and simply just pick and choose a few items presumably on the Time Machine external HD and just add them ?
If so, how do I do it, please ?
