I understand time machine updates every hour on information change to your external drive. However, I am uncertain how that will be useful for my laptop. I'm always moving it. Can I casually plug it in and have it backup my data? is that efficient?

Thanks,

Josh

Time machine does not back up "As soon as you plug your drive in", however it usually performs a backup with 30 mins. I use it with my macbook pro and have had no problems.

If you miss a scheduled backup Time Machine will run a backup as soon as you're plugged back in.

It doesn't hurt to just tell it to backup now either.

If it doesnt do it right away, you can plug it in, and right click the time machine icon on the dock --> select Back up now.

That should do it

Thanks for asking the question and thanks for the responses!

Hi everyone. I had the exact same question and I just wanted to thank the original poster for asking the question and everyone else for their responses. Thanks:)

It will only auto-backup once plugged back in if your laptop is on AC power. If it's on battery, then time machine won't run a backup unless you explicitly select Backup Now.
