Hi,

I have an older 2 tb Time Capsule (the shorter, flatter one, not the taller one) that I replaced with a new wifi 6 capable router. After some trial and error, I connected the Time Capsule to the router with an ethernet cable, disabled the wifi and set the router to "off" Bridge mode.

It seems to be very slow to make back ups now, but it's possible I'm just more aware of it now. Would this configuration cause any problems with speed or otherwise?

Also, it will say it is backing up 1.72 gb or something like that, but there is no way I added that much to my hard drive since the previous back up an hour ago. Why does it say it is backing up so much data?

I know I should probably replace the Time Capsule with a newer external hard drive. I don't really have a need for a NAS drive, but it sounds like it would be nice to have access to all my files over the inter-tubes. But, then I hear about how difficult NAS drives can be to set up and then are prone to security issues. Is there any one that is easier to use (especially with a Mac)?

Or, it just a lot easier and safer for a novice to stick with a simple non-NAS usb backup drive? If so, any models work seamlessly with Time Machine?

Thank you for your time!

I didn't notice the speed problem, but I think it had to do a full backup when I did that same configuration change to mine. After the new backup, I think it went back to normal incremental. The weird problem for me is that I used it only for one computer after the change and set all the others on the network to backup to a different hard drive just because the one I left -- my son's -- was using the most space. But now the TC is full and won't back up my son's computer any more. I believe I have a 4 gig TC backing up a 1 gig HD computer ...

That's the simplest. But don't rely on TM as your only backup. Have at least 1 clone (such as with Carbon Copy Cloner) and a 3-2-3 backup strategy.
