I have a MBP with an SSD and HDD combo setup. The HDD failed. Is there any way for me to restore a new HDD from my Time Machine backup that I have for the entire system?

When you say SSD and HDD combo setup, did you mean fusion drive? If yes then the answer is yes, you will need to replace the HDD and fusion it back again.

afterwhich you can restore from time machine.

I have a similar setup, but I have a different problem. I wanted to free up SSD space, so I copied my Home folder to the HDD, instructed the system to find it there, rebooted, and...

Now the system doesn't see the SSD at all. So I don't know how to move back to my earlier configuration. I thought I could restore the entire SDD from Time Machine, but don't know how. I'm afraid if I try a Total System Restore it will try to back my my almost-full 2TB HDD as well, rather than just the 256GB SSD.

Can you advise? I'd be very grateful.
