Hi all,

Newbie to the forums.

I have been having issues with Time Machine over the last week or so, where it keeps prompting to need to create a new backup, hence losing all my history. Now, it’s not too big a deal as I have stuff like photos and music all backed up separately, but is frustrating as hell.

it happens on both my MBP (Mid 2015, I think) and MacMini ofmsimilar vintage, both on latest public Catalina.

I managed to get the Mini backing up ok finally today, after about 10 attempts, I stopped indexing on the Time Capsule and seems to have helped. Backing about 250gb.

But the MBP just flat refuses. Every time i complete a backup (I have tried reducing the scope to exclude all sorts, so the size is only about 10gb, but still it asks to recreate). It sometimes just prompts immediately, other times, if I verify the backup manually, it then throws a strop.

Anyone got any tips to try? I have lost confidence in TM tbh.

Cheers

I’m having this problem too. Started last week as well. Driving me nuts. I can’t even get a successful backup now. About 270 GB in, it just fails with an error occurred copying files. Nothing in the logs to indicate what. Both AFP and SMB present this problem. I thought I broke something, so I tried resetting the services and re-installing macOS, but nothing. Maybe there’s a way to factory reset Time Machine?

Have you checked if the firmware is up to date on your Time Capsule? The other possibility is that the backup image on the TC might be corrupted. Maybe this will help: http://blog.jthon.com/?p=31. I realize the article is really old but it might help none the less.
