I'm looking to do a fresh install of Leopard (getting rid of a bunch of 3rd party crap installed, etc), but I don't want to lose certain files.
When I'm installing leopard, i know there's an option to restore the entire computer. Is it possible to just take certain files and not have the entire drive backed up?

You would have to do a clean install, and then fire up TM after the install, and just restore only the selected files you want.

I've done this a couple of times.... if you just do a clean install, after the install of OSX finishes... it will ask you if you want to migrate your files from a different computer.... in this step there is an option to use a time machine backup... it's still not specific, but it will give you the option of I think 4 or 5 categories (Applications, User, Etc <sorry I don't remember them all off hand>) but it doesn't let you get into the categories and exclude certain files.... which I didn't like

my solution (assuming you don't mind erasing you time machine backups from before) is install the OS with a clean install... and then connect your time machine HD... go into the backup folder and double click on the latest folder, and then form there take the folders you want... I went in and just copied my Movies, Documents, Music, and Pictures folders... and then reassigned Timemachine to the new install.... it starts a new time machine folder system, so you can either keep the old one, or delete it... ( i deleted it cause it was basically backing up the exact same stuff, just under a new name aka the freshly installed OS)

hope this helps
