Time Machine Restore

After trying to clean my hard drive up, I restarted my computer after it froze. After the apple logo showed up on the screen, the message that says "You need to restart your computer" in 10 different languages comes up and prevents me from going any further.

I restarted and it came up again. I tried Safe Boot, that didn't work. I booted from the installation disk for Mac OS X 10.5.6, I repaired the disk in disk utility and repaired the disk permissions. Both did nothing.

So I have to restore my computer from my external Hard drive that has Time Machine backups from this morning to last year on it. There is a warning message in the time machine restore program (on the installation disk) that says that all data will be erased from the volume you select. Is this the external hard drive or the internal (Macintosh HD) drive?

It's referring to the drive that you're restoring to. TM will still have all your backups after you restore from your external drive.

So that means it will erase my internal HD but not my external.


Now I also have files that weren't part of the TM backups but were just on the HD. Will those still be there as well?

Which hard drive will you mean?

Basically, Time Machine should leave your external drive intact. It sounds like it will erase your internal drive and restore what was backed up by Time Machine.

If you had additional files on the external drive then they should remain untouched.

If you had additional files on your internal drive that weren't backed up by Time Machine, then those will be lost. If you have any way to access your drive right now to retrieve that information, do it before you restore it with Time Machine.
