Time machine server - backing up multiple machines

So where I work, we've each got a macbook pro, which means that there's about 8 or 9 thought the business....

So we want to find a way of backing them up, and were considering whether we can back them up to a server. However it would probably be preferable to us to have a managed server run by a third party rather than one in the office..... is it possible to have a server like that? Or does the server need to be local to be used for time machine backups?

Local would be better as speed would be the key to this. Especially with what sounds like a mobile office in play. You don't need to spend a fortune just get a Mac mini add external storage that's large enough for your needs and download the osx server add on.

Yeah we're a mix of out and about, and in the office, but its a serviced office, and we don't have our own network etc.... also we have some people working for us who never come into the office.....

You could get a package that does this for you but I'd hate to think how long the initial backup would take to upload on a standard internet connection.

What about a TimeCapsule? I use it for the local backups of my three macs.

My boss has just said he does want it local.... so I guess a Nas is one option of a mac mini server is another

I'd be tempted to go mac mini server with raid connected.

Ill also have to consider how to network it..... Wireless router plug into one of the offices ethernet ports for an internet connection and then mac mini connected via gigabit ethernet i guess?
