I'm try to use Mavx Server as a source TM disk for two laptops, also running 10.9.
I turn on TM serving, set a folder location for the backup. On the client, I can select this as the TM volume. It asks to connect as a user, guest, or with an AppleID. Whichever one I try, I get a connection error.

Do I need to setup a user on the server? When I create a user in Server.app, it doesn't ask me to supply a password for the user. How do I do that?

I had this same exact issue today. What I did was go into the users and create a new user, it can be whatever(I named mine backup since I only have one mac to backup). Then use that username and password to set up Time Machine on your Mac. That solved my issue, and I think it's because Time Machine was having issues logging on with a user that was already logged into the server.

I hope I helped!
