I'm having a heck of a time with TM and encrypting my backup. I started this Friday, but it filled up my 4 disk Drobo Array (4 750GB drive array). Basically it crashed the DAS, and I had to reset it, losing my prior backups (that was the only thing on the drive).

I re-started the encrypted backup yesterday morning, this morning it was stuck at 8 percent encryption. This evening, I see what appears to be a hourly backup stuck at 9.9 (out of 10.9mb). So far that's been sitting there at this stage for about 3 hours.

I'm re-thinking the idea of using an encrypted backup to protect my sensitive data and perhaps using some other encryption solution.

Did you see this article at Drobo? Not sure that it applies to your set up -- http://myproducts.drobo.com/article/AA-01370

Thanks, this makes perfect sense, since I when I woke up this morning, the backup failed and I ran out of space on one of my volumes. The exact same thing that occurred Friday/Saturday. Looks like I'll need to find a different solution to protect my data.

Edit: Looks like in resetting my drobo and updating the firmware, I can have a specific backup volume on the drobo that does support encryption. I'm going to play with that and hopefully that will work

Well, it seems the new Time Machine feature of the Drobo, still does not work with encryption. 3 days into doing backups, it filled one of the volumes up on ym drobo and crashed the drive array. The only recourse is to reset and reformat.

I've done that it doesn't appear that using encryption can be done with the drobo :(

Can you make an encrypted sparse bundle image on the Mac in Disk Util, then copy that to the Drobo, then mount and unlock that and use it as the TM target? That is basically how a Apple Time Capsule handles encryption and I think would work for you.

Yeah, I'll have to figure some sort of work around either using an encrypted dmg on my mac to hold my sensitive data, or as you recommend using it as the TM destination. I'm going to look at other software, hardware) and other solutions before I make any sort of decision.
