I use an external WD mycloud NAS drive on which I have a Time Machine back up. Since upgrading to Mac OS Monterey, the time machine stops working and gives me the attached error. Am I the only one? I'm using an M1 iMac.

I had the same thing happen. I bet you are on Monterey or Big Sur.

Many hourly backups were successful, then one day that was showing. I had to use finder to go in and simply delete the old backup to "blank disc" time machine. Then start a new backup. It's been working since... but given Monterey seemingly-buggy relationships with various external devices- even Apple's own- I expect it to happen again at just about any time. I've seen some other people describing brand new time machine issues since upgrading to Monterey or Big Sur. Here's 147 posts about the topic here.

Sometimes time machine is unable to backup your data and shows errors as Time machine backup failed etc.

Here are few DIY fixes to resolve the time machine backup failure issue:

1. Check external hard drive’s file system.
2. Check free disk space on external hard drive.
3. Check for junk files or other unwanted data as it might be causing problem.
4. Check if the Mac software is updated.
5. Try restarting your Mac.
6. Check if the mac and the backup drive connected to the same network.

By checking the above issues, you might resolve the time machine backup failure.

Hope it helps!
