A search did not reveal anything on my somewhat unique situation, so here goes. I have a 2015 MBP, and decided I wanted to upgrade, mostly because of the darn Thunderbolt 2 ports. Okay, so I found a nice 2018 MBP, that meets my needs. The "new" machine already had the MacOS installed, and was sitting at the "Choose language" prompt. I went through that sequence, then restored from the latest backup off the Time Machine of the 2015 laptop. Then, I tried to get that backup drive with Time Machine to back up the "new" laptop, and it refused, saying that there were two machines with the same name, and to rename the new machine. Okay, so I did that. Nope, same error. I tried everything I could think of, reformatting the external drive, renaming the new machine, etc, etc. I spent about an hour and a Half with senior level tech support at Apple. Still the system still sees duplicate drives, no matter where I rename the new machine.
My question is now, can I rename a machine in the iCloud situation, no matter what I rename locally, the listings in iCloud remains "Steves MacBook Pro" and "Steves MacBook Pro (2)". I'm not quite ready to completely disable the 2015 laptop, but I think that might be my next step, removing the "old" laptop from the iCloud, I don't know if Time Machine looks at iCloud during a backup or not.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks for reading this long post.
