I just replaced my HD now snow leopard will not restore from time machine. I have the snow leopard disc inserted then I clicked disk utility, restore from backup chose 2 different saves with the same result. Gets about 10% done and cannot restore.

Time machine will not restore to new HD.

It jut says cannot restore. There is a error log but it was long. I am installing snow leopard right now and will try to restore after the OS is installed will post more info soon.
Looks like everything restored, thank goodness! I installed Snow Leopard and then used the Migration Assistant.
Consider getting Carbon Copy Cloner to use as a secondary backup strategy. It is especially useful for what you just did, replace a hard drive. CCC makes a bootable clone making it extremely easy to replace a drive and keep an identical backup or two or three. I use both TM and CCC
I prefer a clean install and rummage my TimeMachine backup for the data I need. I had once restored my system from a backup and it had the same software issues I formatted for anyways. TM is a great tool but it has it's drawbacks. Clean installs take a little more work but you know it's working.

Here is but one more post showing why Time Machine is of little use for many users, and in some cases is downright dangerous.
It gives the "sensation" of being "backed up", and then -- in a moment of great need -- leaves the end user "hanging".
TM is "phoney-baloney" backup.
If you want REAL backup, use either CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper. Either will create a fully-bootable backup in POFF (plain ol' Finder format). Just boot from the backup and either restore the entire drive or a single file.
