Time Machine working under Sierra?

How long should the first post-install backup take? It's always a bit lengthy after a new OS, but this time around, it seems to just be stuck at the "Preparing Backup" stage, with no change in a day. Checking the logs with the aid of Time Machine Editor doesn't indicate anything wrong, though also gives no indication of any progress.

And my fav' time machine widget which has proved very reliable to view progress of backups is since full of errors.
