If I used time machine to backup my MBP on lion and now I have a Mac mini running on a different build of lion would it matter if I restore from backup on the mini or would it conflict with the MBP backup since they run on different builds of lion os x?

Each machine will have its own backup. They won't overlap.

Thanks for the quick response.. I think you misunderstood me. What I want to know if I can use the backup I did on my MPB and use it to restore from it on my mac mini. Typically I know there wouldn't be a problem because that's what time machine is for. The only thing that concerns me it that they run on different build versions of lion

You don't want or need to do a full system restore from Time Machine. Use the Migration Assistant when setting up the new Mini (or, if already setup, run Migration Assistant app and transfer the items you want from the backup (System settings, apps, user data, etc.).

If you did a full restore, you are correct in that you very likely will end up with an inappropriate version of Lion installed on the Mini. Though it might run, you could and up with instabilities.
